YouTube thumbnails for sermons

A sermon thumbnail has one job: be readable at the size of a postage stamp in a row of other videos. That means a short title, high contrast, and no bulletin details. Fast Ministry Graphics exports it at the same 16:9 shape as a slide, with thumbnail craft instead of slide craft.

What makes a thumbnail fail

Verse numbers, the church address, and a subtitle under a subtitle all disappear on a phone. The title should still make sense if you can only read three words.

Export size

Thumbnails export at 1536 × 864 pixels (16:9), which is larger than 720p and the shape YouTube expects. Upload the PNG as the video’s custom thumbnail.

Questions

Should the thumbnail match the sermon slide?

Use the same title and the same style, but fewer words. A slide can hold a scripture. A thumbnail usually cannot.

Can I put the pastor’s face on it?

Only if you have the right to use that photo. Do not upload anyone’s picture without their consent.
